Physical & Product description
Melamine Polyphosphate is a white free flowing crystalline powder, non-halogenated, phosphorus based flame retardant useful by itself or as an adjuvant for flame retarding various thermoplastics, polyolefins, elastomers, engineering resins, paints and intumescent fire retardant coatings, it can partly replace Ammonium Polyphosphate(APP) due to its excellent flame retardant mechanisms. Melamine Polyphosphate can also be used in non-polymer fields covering Epoxy, Paper, Paint, Wood Laminates to effect fire retardant barriers. Melamine Polyphosphate is useable for Di-pentaerythritol as well as polyolefins, and available for SMC process (unsaturated polyester resins), Melamine Polyphosphate can be also used together with ammonium Polyphosphate (as an intumescent resource and catalyst) in some intumescent flame retardant applications.

Product Code
Plastic application type: Melamine Polyphosphate used for thermal plasticsIntumescent
Coating application type : Melamine Polyphosphate used for flame retardant intumescent coatings.

Flame Retardant Mechanisms
Because of the synergism of combination of Nitrogen and Phosphorus, only a small injection dosage is required for formulation achieving UL 94 V-0 grade flame retarding, due to Acidic catalysis, inert gas formation and foaming, flames shall be retared and eliminated effectively.
Melamine Pyrophosphate doesn't contribute to formation of toxic gases.

Application Guide:
Melamine Polyphosphate can be processed up to 300℃ on typical polymer processing equipment such as single or twin screw extruders, internal batch mixer (Banbury type) and roll mills. Molding operations such as injection molding and thermal forming processes are easily accomplished with composites made of this flame retardant.
28-30% Melaflam®MPY is the suggested adding dosage for Polymer or Intumescent Coatings.

Cost comparison with other halogenated flame retardants
Cost savings can be achieved with Melamine Polyphosphate composites over halogenated systems due to the density difference of the flame retardants, i.e. the halogenated systems contribute significantly more to the composite's density. Therefore, more more composite of Melamine Polyphosphate compound can be produced for the same weight. Another benefit over other halogenated materials is the reduction of smoke generated with the combustion of compounds prepared with Melamine Polyphosphate (measure optically by smoke subscription, ASTM-2483).
